HAPPY THANKSGIVING

REJOICE IN YOUR FAMILY.

Thanksgiving Day Poem

Over the river and through the wood,

To grandfather's house we go;

The horse knows the way

To carry the sleigh

Through the white and drifted snow.

Over the river and through the wood

Oh, how the wind does blow!

It stings the toes

And bites the nose,

As over the ground we go.

Over the river and through the wood,

To have a first-rate play.

Hear the bells ring,

"Ting-a-ling-ding!"

Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!

Over the river and through the wood

Trot fast, my dapple-gray!

Spring over the ground,

Like a hunting-hound!

For this is Thanksgiving Day.

Over the river and through the wood,

And straight through the barn-yard gate

We seem to go

Extremely slow,

It is so hard to wait!

Over the river and through the wood

Now grandmother's cap I spy!

Hurrah for the fun!

Is the pudding done?

Hurrah for the pumpkin-pie?

Let’s Play A Game

Here is a fun game to play sitting at the Thanksgiving table or on the floor of a crowded room full of digesting relatives on a happy Thanksgiving evening:

The name of the game is very simply “Rhymes”

You will need:
Small slips of paper (as many as there are players)
Pencils
Imaginations

The slips of paper are passed among the players and each one is asked to write upon one of the papers, two words which will rhyme. These papers are collected and in turn read aloud, each of the players will then write short stanzas employing the rhyming words.

It is so amusing to see what very different ways the same set of words might be treated by the various players.

The best kind of play is free and has only two requirements — your child and his imagination.

Let’s Play Another Game

It’s a guessing game.

Thanksgiving originated with the pilgrims who came from England aboard the Mayflower. Besides the Mayflower, what other ships might your children be acquainted with?

Provide each child (parents will have fun with this as well) with pencils and paper having the following questions upon it:

Other than the Mayflower what ship would serve as the answer to each of the questions below:

1. What they met for on Sunday?
2. What feeling existed among them?
3. What ship was popular with the young folks?
4. What did it lead up to?
5. What was one of the young women fond of?
6. What was unpleasant for them?
7. What caused them to leave England?
8. What interfered with their peace?
9. What would have aided them?
10. What increased their number?

The answers are:

1. Worship; 2. Friendship; 3. Courtship; 4. Partnership; 5. Fellowship; 6. Hardship; 7. Rulership; 8. Leadership; 9. Airship; 10. Heirship.

Let’s Pretend

“WHAT THE CHILD IMITATES, HE BEGINS TO UNDERSTAND.”—Froebel - 1889.

Role Playing is Fun - Let’s pretend we’re the pilgrims and indians of long ago.

Encourage each child to tell what they think it might have been like to live at the time of the pilgrims.
What was it like to cross the ocean on a large ship.
What must it have been like to embark on such a long journey.
Was it frightening to find people living in their new land who were so different from they?
What must it have been like without electricity? Running water?
What did children do all day, so very long ago?

Good Night Poem

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,
Bless the bed that I lie on;
Four posters to my bed,
Four angels on the spread:
One to watch and two to pray,
One to take my fears away.
