The best kind of play is free and has only two requirements — your child and his imagination.

According to an article titled "Fostering Creativity" in Child magazine, "Creative play is the foundation of critical thinking, of making life meaningful. It is essential to child growth and development, and we're interfering with it in ways that are incredibly worrisome."

Electronic toys do not develop creativity. In fact, they are not teaching at all. They are merely time absorbers.

The Wind

I saw you toss the kites on high
And blow the birds about the sky;
And all around I heard you pass,
Like ladies' skirts across the grass

I saw the different things you did,
But always you yourself you hid.

Let’s Play A Game

Sit outside with your child.
Ask them to close their eyes.
What do you hear?
What direction is the sound coming from?
Who is making the sound?
What does the sound mean?
Can you hear any quieter sounds than that one?
How far away might it be?
What might be making that sound?

Have them Notice what they feel.
Is it the wind? Sun? Cold? Hot? Warm?
Have him explain what it feels like - use analogy - it feels like a fan blowing on me in summer. It feels like cold when building snowman……
Where is it coming from?
Do they feel it on one side of face or both? Against their back to full front?

What do they smell?

Try to get them to use all of their senses, beside sight.

The object is to have them “notice” things that they wouldn’t normally notice while eyes are open.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star;
How I wonder what you are!
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.

When the glorious sun is set,
When the grass with dew is wet,
Then you show your little light,

Gettin’ Crafty

Make up a story about the “noticing” exercise above. Invent characters and give them names. If they felt the wind - give it a name. Mr. Wind, North Wind, Happy Wind. Whatever they choose - it’s their story.

Use sketch paper and have your child draw his characters. Crayons too.

You write. Let them dictate. Or bring a recorder. Priceless as the years pass.

Let’s Pretend

Role play a character from his story.
Using Mr. Wind as example. Where does Mr. Wind live?
Does he have a family?
Are Mr. Rain, Mr. Moon, Mrs. Sun. . . related?
